About ChessIreland
Think. Play. Grow.
ChessIreland is Ireland’s first nationwide chess-education initiative.
We introduce children to chess in a way that is fun, engaging, and curriculum-aligned.
Through workshops, after-school clubs, and tournaments, we bring the benefits of chess into classrooms across the country.
Our programmes build critical thinking, resilience, and creativity.
Every child deserves the chance to learn the game of kings — and the skills it teaches for life.
That’s the vision driving ChessIreland.

Our Story
ChessIreland was founded in February 2025 by Tomás Fitzpatrick and Oisín Flynn, both fully qualified primary school teachers and lifelong chess players.
As students, we proudly represented Mary Immaculate College abroad on two occasions at international chess tournaments in Belgium.Since launching, we have already taught over 1,000 children the game of chess through school workshops, after-school clubs, and community events. In our very first year, we hosted the largest charity chess tournament in Kerry, with 112 children competing in a single weekend. What started as a local idea has quickly grown into a movement — building Ireland’s first nationwide chess ecosystem, designed to inspire young minds and strengthen communities through the power of chess. "Both my son and daughter age 7&10 joined chess club for the summer. They both loved it and learned so much. It has thought them to sit and concentrate. I has given them focus to use the brain rather then being technology dependent. I would highly recommend chest club for any child."

“My son has absolutely loved his time with Chess Ireland. The classes have not only helped him learn strategy and problem-solving but have also given him a real boost in confidence. He’s made new friends through the group, and I can see how much he enjoys both the social side and the challenge of the game. It’s wonderful to watch him so engaged and excited to keep improving every week.”

“I would like to sincerely thank you and the entire chess club team for the positive impact you have had on my two children, Marsel (12) and Mexten (9). Since joining the club, they have not only developed their chess skills but have also learned valuable lessons in patience, strategy, and discipline.
We are especially happy to see that their time spent on screens has reduced significantly, and they are showing greater focus and concentration in school. It is wonderful to see them engaged in such a meaningful activity that is shaping both their minds and character.
We truly appreciate the dedication, guidance, and encouragement provided by the chess club. Thank you for creating such an inspiring environment for our children to learn and grow.
With gratitude,
Josh”

“My son Riain attended Tralee chess club during the summer of 2025. There was a very safe, welcoming atmosphere from day one and Oisín and Tomás couldn’t have been kinder. He learned so much while immersed in a very fun, safe environment. He attended a tournament in August and it was one of the highlights of his summer. We cannot thank all at Tralee chess club enough, they not only provided Riain with new skills but they very much helped build Riains confidence both in Chess and socially. He will definitely be back.

"Ollie was introduced to chess quite early on by his granddad from Cork. They would play chess together whenever he visited. Chess granddad was always on the lookout for a local chess club but none existed it seemed post covid. Chess started to gain momentum in the school and his friends and then your classes started in the summer. As a mom I was delighted to keep chess alive in the family especially as granddad passed away last year. I really wish all the best for the future of your chess club as it is so good for our children. Providing an outlet other than the usual sports for children is opening up alot of opportunities for them and helping them to develop their mental mind. Thank you 🙏”
